Ulipristal Acetate: ella

Ulipristal acetate (UPA) is a new compound shown to be safe and effective for use to reduce the risk of pregnancy for up to five days (120 hours) after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure.  In May 2009, the European Medicines Agency approved the sale of a 30 mg tablet of UPA as emergency contraception, under the brand name ellaOne®.

On August 13, 2010, FDA approved a 30 mg tablet of UPA as ella®, a safe and effective emergency contraceptive product in the United States.  As of December 1, 2010, ella is available in the U.S. as a prescription-only product. A woman can receive a prescription from her health care provider or order ella through an online prescription service.
